#34 - 40 till 40

Confused about this post? Start with the intro - HERE

I am grateful for writing.

This one is multi-fold for me. First, writing has always been an easier way for me to express myself, so I am grateful in the sense that it is a way I can express myself more fully. Second, as I am sure you have guess by now reading this, I just love the act of it, whether it’s writing blogs, journaling, writing stories, creating worlds, sharing information, teaching, I love all forms of writing. It is also so important for me for processing life, my emotions, and my feelings. It’s one of my best processing tools and I am grateful to have it. Third, the written language is fascinating to me as a concept, as are words and language in general.

Do you ever think about the fact that we have a society wide agreement that certain sounds strung together have certain meanings to us and we all understand them to some degree? I mean, that is just astounding when you think about it. Then to be able to put that into symbols on a page and have them have meaning. Wow. The fact that you can read this right now and have any idea what I am talking about or have a feeling evoked, or a new idea, again, wow. Communication always floors me. I feel like, if that is possible between people, brains, and hearts, then truly anything is possible.

I’ve felt this way about language for most of my life. I just marvel at it. Then sometime in the last year I watched this PBS special on the first written alphabet and language, and it blew me away. It was one of the most fascinating shows I’ve ever watched (though I suppose that’s not saying much considering how little TV I watch). Written language started with trade and if I remember correctly, as symbol for wheat carved into a stone. The entirety of the currently known written languages started with that one symbol and here I am typing letters into a device that will then put it into the ethers for you to read in your own home. Just, WOW.

Ok, awe tangent over. I am grateful for writing. To be able to do it, to be able to share it, to be able to use it for self development, to be able to read it. It gives me such great joy.

Awareness Practice: Wrapped up in this post and many others is my love of language expressed in writing. How we use language in our everyday life tells us a lot about our experience. Today, I invite you to notice how you use language and writing in your everyday life. Notice what you notice. Notice what keys to the map of your life live within your language.
